Event Overview

“Dungeons & Dragons is having a moment.”

I keep seeing this sentence (and variations of it) in publications like The New Yorker, Variety, Forbes, Vox…so it’s not just me saying it. Dungeons & Dragons has come out of the basement…it’s everywhere.  I mean…I bought my most recent D&D t-shirt at Target.

Lots of people play D&D…and lots more want to try D&D, but there’s stuff in the way. Sadly, a lot of people conjure up an image of What D&D Players Are Like and they don’t imagine themselves. I am here to tell you with absolute confidence that somewhere in our city, People Like You are playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Bring a buddy, a date, or just your awesome self. I’ll bring the rest. We’ll talk about the basics of D&D 5th Edition, and then we’ll play. No judgment, no pressure, just laughs and a story to share.

Did you know that Dame Judy Dench plays D&D? It’s true. She runs a game for her grandkids. She started playing over 15 years ago, with Vin Diesel. Did I just blow your mind?

Note: We've been able to lower our ticket price thanks to the generosity of our friends at The Teal Room/Pub 626/The Glenwood! Please support them!

Prerequisites

This class is for adults and teens accompanied by an adult. It is intended for people who are new to Dungeons & Dragons. We do our very best to respect everyone's abilities, tolerances, and situations; that said, your host only speaks English, and there will be small amounts of reading and arithmetic involved. The game includes depictions of fantasy combat and monsters which may not appeal to everyone, but our presentation is intended to fall somewhere on the "family" side of PG-13.

What's Provided

You will get to choose (and keep!) a set of polyhedral game dice. We'll provide pre-made characters, miniatures, maps and everything else you'll need to play.

What You Can Expect From This Experience
  • A few minutes talking about what D&D is.
  • A few more minutes talking about who you are. Much more interesting
  • A little bit about how to play, but not for long. (Best just to play!)
  • You'll choose a pre-made character and breathe life into them!
  • Then, your intrepid heroes will save a town from monsters! Like heroes do.
  • All in an intimate, welcoming gallery space with no more than 6 players!

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Your host, Adam, started playing Dungeons & Dragons a quarter-century ago with a binder full of photocopied 2nd Edition rulebooks. He mostly created and sketched characters throughout high school, while planning to (but rarely actually sitting down to) adventure.

Adam has been an active D&D player and dungeon master for about 17 years. He currently runs a giant campaign for a rotating cast of over 30 heroes, and plays in several other long-running games. Additionally, he's been an actor, director, designer, New Orleans ghost tour guide, and ESL teacher. He lives in Rogers Park with his wife and two kitty cats.

“But it is one thing to read about dragons and another to meet them.” -Ursula K. LeGuin

I've been wanting to get into D&D for a while, Adam set up a very fun mini-quest to get to know the mechanics of the game.
I was so grateful for his knowledge on AL and the whole party got out alive as level 1's! Thanks again.
